The first of a number of concepts planned for the so-called "District 300" block of Center City opens its doors this week.
RE:PUBLIC, at 314 N. College St., is described as "a stylish yet un-hoity haven for everyone from habitual celebrators to casual clubbers who are looking for a little extra oomph in their nightlife and a whole lot more creativity in the contents of their cocktail glasses."
Designed by Scott Weaver, RE: PUBLIC "combines the aesthetic of a swank mid-'70s ski lodge with the appeal of a modern Manhattan hideaway." Artisan tequila and cerveza cocktails created by mixologist Stefan Huebner will feature exotic ingredients -- egg whites, jalapeno, and cherry
bitters, to name a few.
Counter Culture roadside kitchen will serve "Route 66-inspired" fare during RE:PUBLIC's operating hours beginning in March, with a menu conceived by partner Andy Kastanas and chef Jason Pound of Soul Gastropub and Cosmos Café.
RE:PUBLIC will host an invite-only "friends and family" event on Wednesday, while Miami-based progressive house DJ Robbie Rivera will play Friday. Saturday's official grand opening party will feature San Franciscan DJs UR Friends and The Les.
Tickets for Friday's event are available at www.sugarsociety.com and invitations for Saturday's party are available at www.republicofcharlotte.com.
The so-called "District 300" block sits on College Street between 6th and 7th. Other "new entertainment concepts" are expected to open around RE:PUBLIC over the next few months.

I heard there was a new club opening up at the prison called The Slammer.
Me and my friends always called it NoCo, shortening the street names like NoDa did. Who decides these things anyway??
Maybe that chick Brittney Cason and that dude that plugs his charlottejohn.com blog can hook up at this club and then fade away into total oblivion.
Is District 300 anything like District 9?
Will this place be another overpriced, overhyped xanadu of skanks and assclowns? If it's charlotte, and in the trashrag CO, then I'm guessing YES!
Oh boy, yet another trendy club for the Jersey Shore types.
On another note, I overheard 2 guys in Lupies a few weeks ago talking about Neighborhood Theater having troubles again.
We also used to have 3 local brewpubs at one time in this place plus some Hops and the Rock. But know we only have 1 local that closes early, yet Hickory has one. I can't wait until differentiating between nightlife in this city is whether the cocktail glasses are clear or lightly tented.

Really? This fad of mixing beer into cocktails is so lame, that it means impending doom for this place.
Newsflash: if you can't decide between beer or a cocktail? Ask a friend for help... don't do both at the same time.
My understanding is the intention with this and other 'district 300' concepts is to be the alternative to the jersey shore crowd found at epi and elsewhere in town.
Give these guys a chance, they are they ones who practically brought nightlife to Uptown before it had a bad name.
Maybe 'district 300' will be a much needed respite from the lcd mentality we've come to expect from much of uptown nightlife.
As long as this club does not play any of the crotch-grabbing rap music that attracts the thugs,then it will do allright..........

The people behind this place know what they are doing.
Did I read that right? Scott Weaver of Snug Harbor fame will be designing this place. If his eclectic sense of style says anything about what this place will be like- then don't worry about seeing anybody with Ed Hardy shirts on.
And yes, cerveza based cocktails rock. Try getting out of Charlotte every once in a while and try something that's on the cutting edge.
