Van Halen plans return to Charlotte

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Van Halen -- one of the most popular rock bands of all time -- are launching another tour, one that will eventually find its way to Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena on April 25.

The tour will begin on Feb. 18, coinciding with the Feb. 7 release of the group's new album, "A Different Kind of Truth." Van Halen is once again fronted by David Lee Roth, and based on what's in the press release, it seems unlikely that the set list will include anything from the Sammy Hagar era.

Roth also sang lead during the band's last visit to Charlotte, on Sept. 27, 2007. That show sold out in a matter of minutes, and pop and reggae-tinged R&B singer Kymani Marley was the opening act. For this tour, Kool & The Gang has been enlisted to kick things off -- although only for "select" tour dates, so it's unclear whether we'll see them here in Charlotte.

The on-sale date for tickets has not yet been announced. Van Halen's only other planned stop in the Carolinas is at the Greensboro Coliseum on April 21.

Nothing like a mid-week rock concert for the working class. Really? I don't get promoters and TW Arena scheduling sometimes. I was at the last VH show and will make this one too, just wished it was a Fri or Sat night gig.

I'll pass. No Michael Anthony means no Van Halen. And the last time I bought tickets for Van Halen, they bailed on Charlotte and cancelled the show. Have a nice life, Eddie.

@JANUARY 6, 2012 2:11 PM - Have you ever heard of scheduling conflicts? There are a lot of variables when it comes to selecting a date. Bobcats have a lot of games in April, as do the Checkers, plus any previously scheduled shows. They don't always have a lot of days to work with.

I realize I'm in the minority but Sammy is my frontman preference. I wore out my 5150 and OU812 cassette tapes. I'll pass on the bald man in tights in concert. And Kool n the Gang...really?

I agree with the 3:37 post. Who wants to see Kool and the Gang. I didn't know Eddie even liked Dave anymore. He'll throw him off the tour and let Wolfgang sing.

Kool & the Gang?

Can you say "Over With"?

i agree with a bad choice of opening acts but i am here to see van halen NOT an opening act. I saw them back in 1981 was the first time and well we are all older and i grew up with VH so i with be runnin with the devil...

I am a fan of both Hagar and the Roth Era. The last time I went in 2007 is was not a good experience. Bad sound, hot, and limited visibility for the video. I will probably sit this one out and wait for Chickenfoot to come through at a smaller venue.

I saw David Lee Roth at a private corporate event a couple years ago. He was still as big a loon as ever...wearing his 80's spandex and looking like a nut. But he was on it...singing as well as ever.

Kool & the Gang - WHAT ?? Maybe there trying to get the Obama's to show up.....must be what Roth uses to warmup his rusty pipes. I'll go though, wishing Earth, Wind and Fire was there to be somewhere in between....lol

can't believe somebody would pay good money to see these old whiners who used to fight like catfighting in a rest home.

they used to make some good rock songs though.

Sammy Hagar was the best thing that ever happened to this band, if you can even call it that anymore after they screwed everybody over thanks to drugs and ego.

I'd rather listen to the wind blow before I'd pay to hear David Lee. Sammy and Michael, glad you got out when you did! What a _______ing train wreck now.

Kook & The Gang are actually a really good band that still put on a great show on tour. This pairing doesn't make any sense though.

Sammy Hagar was a true lead singer in a rock band! Roth wants all the focus to be on him! He always has, and always will! He's only back with VH because thats the only way he's going to get back on a big stage! VH was always one of my favorite bands! But, after the Cherone fiascal, and Roth back in, then out, now back in again, it's all kinda sad! they used to rock, now they are trying to rekindle something with Roth that will never be again! Chickenfoot is an awesome band!

The tour should be called the senior citizens tour.

Def Leppard is better.

I prefer the 1988-Fall 1988 period. The Monti Rock III era.

Save your money from a $100+ ticket and go see Checkenfoot when they come back /|\, Saw them in 2007, just isnt the same Van Halen anymore.
