Charlotte-based Harper's Restaurant Group announced today the closing of its restaurant, Zink. American Kitchen, located in the IJL building, at 201 North Tryon Street. Open since 2004, the popular eatery is a favorite of Uptown professionals and is known for its twist on New American cuisine, its lively outdoor patio and late night ambience. The restaurant's last day of operation will be Saturday, July 31, 2010.
Tom Sasser, owner and president of Harper's Restaurant Group, said that the location has been purchased for a non-restaurant use. "The buyer has indicated that the space will be renovated for office or possibly retail purposes. Although Zink has continued to be profitable, we had experienced multiple physical plant issues over the years and felt like this sale was a smart business move in the long run."
"We are working with two groups for another location in Uptown or Southpark to carry on the Zink tradition in a new space. We would like to thank our great associates and guests for their loyal support over the years. We hope our friends will stop by this last week to enjoy great New American food and drink from Executive Chef Jon Fortes and the team and let us say goodbye."
"On Zink's last night, Saturday July 31, Chef Jon will offer a 'Toast to Zink' Menu with many of our guests' favorites. It will include Streetside Tacos, Zink's signature 'Not Your Mother's' Meatloaf and Lobster Roll Sliders, among others," said Sasser.
Sasser indicated that they hope to begin serving some of Zink's signature food and drink items at other Harper's Restaurant Group locations. Mimosa Grill, located in Uptown Charlotte at 327 South Tryon, will immediately start serving Saturday lunch and a new Sunday brunch buffet.

ReplyDeleteSo sick of Observer headlines touting the demise of Uptown. Then when you read the article it's actually nothing of the sort. THe business was successful and is looking at other Uptown locals.
This really isn't the demise of something in uptown. The owner of the property essentially got bought out. From rumors that I've heard it will be a 5/3 Bank retail operation. The bank recently put their NC HQ in the IJL building.

ReplyDeleteI thought Zink was a well-priced, comfortable restaurant. Not stuffy, but still excellent food. People are saying this place was overpriced with small portions, but I doubt they've ever been there. The portions are plenty unless you are used to eating enough for three people. I will look forward to Zink's return at another location!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely very little foreclosures in uptown. Our building of almost 400 units has only had 4 foreclosures during this downturn and most of our unit owners work for the banks.
ReplyDeleteSo go cry a river somewhere else Burb Boy. Your subdivision likely has 30% to 50% of it's homes up for sale with about a 20% foreclosure rate.
We currently have just 8% of our units on the market. Average for us even during boom times. And at least we have nightlife, theater, movies, bowling, restaurants, concerts, sports and transit options all within a few blocks walk. What do you have ? Oh yeah, another cul-de-sac. Enjoy the sounds of weed eaters and lawnmowers all weekend long. I'll be sipping a nice cold cocktail while hanging with beautiful women by the pool.

ReplyDeleteTry reading the article sh!thead. They are looking to hopefully relocate Uptown. This is nothing more than the property being sold/leased to 5/3 Bank. Uptown has only had Ratcliff go under and it's hard to believe that ever stayed open to begin with.
We've had numerous restaurants, bars and wine spots open in the past few months. But you wouldn't know that would you since your fat butt never gets unglued from your couch.
Take a look around you. Mid sized cities all over the USA have residents returning to their core. It's the Suburbs that will decay within the next decade. That's where the ghettos will be and the rich will be back where they started, in the Uptown and close in town neighborhoods.
Just wait until gas hits $6 or $7 / gallon like in other countries.

Anon 12:17 - there have been a few restaurants uptown to go under recently. Besides the Radcliffe, Jolina, Uno's, Harry & Jean's and the Pine Room come immediately to mind. Something tells me that the story about Zink being wildly successful and only closing because Fifth Third bought the space is as much spin as fact. The $50-per-plate restaurants were way overbuilt, just as the $350-per-square-foot condos were way overbuilt. What uptown could really use is some $150-per-square-foot living spaces and some mid-priced places to eat. I still think the Harry & Jean's space should be converted into a Cracker Barrel.
ReplyDeleteI am visiting Charlotte on business and have been staying in Uptown at a condo owned by my company for the most part of this summer. I travel all over the states for my job and I am telling you that I am thoroughly enjoying what Charlotte has to offer. I am a 37 year old male and there is never a shortage of things for me to do. I've been bowling, to the movies, seen a few plays. I've gone to the NC Music Factor twice to see concerts. I visit your museums and dine at your restaurants. I go jogging around the city every morning that it's not raining and I bike in the evenings. And yes, I do partake in the Thursday night music festivities at the Epi Center. It's quite fun and your women in Charlotte are beautiful to say the least.

I have had no issues with crime unless you call being asked for change twice all summer a crime.You can actually live in the center of Charlotte and not even need a car for the most part. I've taken your train/bus service to South Park Mall and caught a ride with coworkers to go to the White Water Center. Your inner neighborhoods ( I believe Myers Park or Dilworth) is incredibly beautiful and full of joggers and bikers.
From an outsiders point of view you have a wonderful city and it's a shame it seems like there's a lot of you that don't partake in it and choose to stay isolated in Suburbia.

ReplyDeleteYou could have bought even cheaper than that price point over at those converted apartments gone condo on Graham St. I believe they sold out in a weeks time though and you are getting zero amenities and living on busy Graham st.
Just like anywhere in town, the nicer the local the more it will cost. The further away from Trade/Tryon you get the cheaper it will be.
You can't expect to live on Tryon or Church for $150/ sq. ft. Not gonna happen. But you can give up size for location. You can have a McMansion in the Burbs for $400,000 or a nice 1,200 sq. ft. pad in the center of town. It all depends on what you want.
You can also have a $200,000 2,500 sq. ft. home on a cul-de-sac or you can cram it into a 700 sq. ft. pad in the city.
It's just choices and they are yours to make.
There's millions of people in the world living in cities that they desire to live in and to do so they have to accept smaller square footage. It's a given.
Uptown isn't I-85. We don't need or want a Cracker Barrel. How about a good Jewish Deli ? You know, lox, cream cheese, whitefish salad, home made bagels and rye, corned beef and pastrami. The real deal ! A real deli is what Uptown needs. Not another chain store like the Fudgery or Brueggers. Why would you want the same junk in the Burbs to be in a downtown destination ? People come downtown for a night out and something different.
ReplyDeleteTo dispell stereotyping, I'm 58 and like the 3:13 poster, my wife and I too live in Uptown but in a Single Family Residence in the Fourth Ward. A small yard (complete with weedwhacker), a garden and a front porch. You might say a bit of suburbia, no? The difference is we sit on our front porch, say "hey" to passerbys and enjoy all the City has to offer - including bars, restaurants and cultural activities. What we do not do is retire to our "deck" in the back isolated from everyone and oblivious to what this great City has to offer.
ReplyDeleteOur home is within a couple of blocks or low income housing and we see a number of homeless "commuters" pass by every day. We've not been assulted, robbed or threatend.
Personnaly, I welcome the newer condo residents to Uptown - they've brought a vibe and livliness that did not exist 10 years ago. I also welcome our suburban visitors as they hopefully will have thier eyes opened and predujudices dispelled about the "Uptown Crowd" once they can experience what Charlotte can offer.
Thanks Anon 3:13. I am a Charlotte native (probably one of the very few posting on this board) who is very proud of her city. I grew up 5 miles away from uptown and have decided to move to the suburbs only because we can have more house this way. The main reason we didn't want to live uptown was the irritation of having to hear police/fire/ambulance sirens 24/7. I enjoy events both uptown and in the burbs. Restaurants not only uptown but all over the city and county are closing, both from the economy and also for reasons we don't know about. No reason to argue about this or where others live. I say live and let live!

Personally I live on Lake Norman and work Downtown, both are wonderful places and all this bickering is just silly. Uptown is fantastic. We just moved up here this year with our 11 year old daughter. It's been great to be able to introduce everything the city has to offer to her. We love our walks through Fourth Ward Park, The Green and feeding the geese at Marshal Park. We can't wait until the city opens the 6 acre park over by Church and 3rd St. as well as the park at the new UNCC Uptown campus.

You come into town and have no concept of how to parallel park, not run over a pedestrian in a crosswalk, use a parking garage ticket machine or even keep you vehicle in one lane without drifting all over the place. ReplyDeleteYes, they are mostly out of control twenty and thirty somethings getting drunk and doing drugs. Thank God Almighty we don't have to be up there with it all. Yes, you're right, when 5pm comes, we get the living hell right out of this wasteland. We could care less about the commute. We have all we need out there. Your beloved uptown couldn't function if we didn't keep it running everyday so you can get trashed at night and ruin it all.

ReplyDeleteI can't speak for all of us, but I think most Uptown-dwellers are not sociopathic suburb-haters like some of those who have posted on this thread. If I wanted to live in a big house, I'd move to the burbs -- but since I prefer living in a condo and walking to work, I live Uptown. Every choice has its advantages and disadvantages. For people to lose their temper over someone else's different choice shows that they have a problem.

ReplyDeleteIn town for the week interviewing, considering a position with an uptown bank (or maybe, "was" considering). Looking at condos uptwon, as well as homes around Mt. Island Lake area.
Not used to this type of cross-town "bashing".
Is there really this much animosity between people who live uptown vs. the suburbs??

3500 sq.ft. residence in a wooded area on the lake, 12 minutes from uptown; or, 1300 sq.ft. condo uptown? Same price.

ReplyDeleteuptown rules - for one, living in a gated high rise condo means no termites, no paper roof leaks, and no scruff knocking at your front door. Sad to see this place go, I did like the floor tiles and the menu. looking forward to them reopening it soon.

I've lived in Cornelius at the lake and I now live in town. Town is sooo much better. I have so much more free time without driving all over the place for life's basic things. I like having everything within a short walking distance. And, for the record, I like not having to mow all that grass. It may not be for everyone.....To each his own, but I love this city. You can have Lake Norman and all the work that life there involves.
